The Chinese Garden
The Chinese Garden is located right beside the lake at the Zürichhorn and was a gift from Kunming, Zurich’s twinned town in China. At the centre is a pond with a small island, pavilions and even a small palace on the banks. It is classed as a temple garden and is one of the highest-ranking gardens outside of China.
Suitable for large events as well as for small meetings and seminars. The Forum part of the arena has capacity for between 600 and 3,000 people. Naturally, the entire hall, covering an area of 3,900 m2, can be used for large-scale events. The Hallenstadion Conference Centre has function rooms ranging in size from 50 m2 to 700 m2 and can therefore cater for events of all kinds.
Museum für Gestaltung - Design Museum
Design, visual communication and architecture: these are the principal themes of this leading design museum. Temporary exhibitions raise awareness of the presence of design in our everyday lives. The museum also organises workshops, concerts and exhibition lectures.
Regular exhibitions take place in the charming columned galleries of the Stadthaus. The focus is on socio-political issues, often with links to Zurich and the region. Issues of relevance to inhabitants of the region and country are highlighted in particular.
The Niederdorf Quarter
The Niederdorf Quarter is part of Zurich’s old historic centre. Locals affectionately refer to it as ‘Dörfli’, or little village, and often mean the entire district of Niederdorf and Oberdorf extending to Bellevue. Like the Limmatquai road that runs parallel to it, the Niederdorf is closed to vehicles. During the day, the many shops tucked away in the alleyways of this pedestrian zone are a temptation inviting you to come shopping. Come the evening, Niederdorf is transformed into an entertainment district whose bars and pubs are filled with a colourful mix of visitors of all kinds. At the end of August there is the popular ‘Dörflifäscht’, or village festival, featuring DJs, market stalls, tasty treats to eat, shows and attractions.
The world-renowned shopping boulevard was created after the construction of Zurich’s main railway station. At the point where city moats once were 150 years ago, nowadays it connects Lake Zurich with the main railway station, extending for a distance of 1.4 km. You will find numerous boutiques, department stores and watchmakers here and also the Paradeplatz – the Swiss banking centre. Bahnhofstrasse is popular with locals and visitors alike and is well worth a visit. You can take a relaxing stroll along the lake front in the summer or, come winter-time, enjoy the mulled wine or hot chocolate on offer at practically every street corner. From the Bahnhofstrasse, the Rennweg and the Augustinergasse will lead you to the picturesque historic centre of the city.
Grossmünster (Great Minster)
The Grossmünster is an iconic Zurich landmark. Legend has it that the church was built over the graves of the city's patron saints, Felix and Regula.
The Kunsthaus Zurich is an art museum and a visit to it is a must for all art lovers. It has one of the most important collections of modern art in Zurich and also stages various temporary exhibitions.

West Zurich: from industrial district to trendy quarter
West Zurich is a district full of contrasts boasting an unpolished charm. This was once an industrial district specialising in mechanical engineering and shipbuilding. Today, art, design, food, culture, shopping and architecture are the centre of attention. The factories have gone, leaving vast expanses of space now ready for creative minds to get to work.
Zurich Opera House
The Zurich Opera House is one of the best in the world. In 2014 it received the Opera Company of the Year award at the International Opera Awards. Two hundred and fifty performances take place here every year. The international stars appearing here include Cecilia Bartoli, Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Anna Netrebko, Emily Magee, Nina Stemme, Stephen Gould, René Pape, Matti Salminen and Klaus Florian Vogt, as well as leading conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Fabio Luisi, Carlo Rizzi and many others.
Uetliberg is Zurich's mountain. From Uetliberg you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the lake and catch a glimpse of the Alps.
Lindenhof hill has witnessed many historic and historical events. In the 4th century a Roman fort stood on Lindenhof. In the 9th century the grandson of Charlemagne built a royal palace as a place of residence on the very same site. This area continued to be a gathering place for Zurich’s inhabitants right up to the beginning of the modern era. For example, the oath sealing the Helvetic Constitution was taken on Lindenhof in 1798.
At Zurich Zoo you can see snow leopards in a rocky Himalayan environment, spectacled bears climbing in their mountainous cloud forest and primeval giant tortoises looking for food in the Masoala rain forest. It is a fragrant tropical oasis, a piece of Madagascar covering 11,000 square metres with a tree-top walk where you can discover flying foxes and butterflies.
Swiss National Museum
More than one hundred years old, the museum building resembles a fairy-tale castle. Behind its imposing walls the past comes to life. How did previous generations live, think and feel? The material heritage they left behind – handicrafts and mundane everyday objects – provides us with the answers, from prehistoric times to the present.
The Museum Rietberg takes visitors on a journey around the world. The treasures waiting to be discovered here range from the enchanting sculptures of Africa to Buddhist art from Asia and cult objects from the South Seas and America.
